What is Trauma?

Let's destigmatize the word TRAUMA! ❤️

Trauma is any event that overwhelms the ordinary human adaptations to life.

It is an overwhelm of our coping capacities, and those capacities are different for everyone. Trauma is really not the actual event, but rather the impact and individual's response to it. Trauma is not only the horrible events like sexual abuse or violence; it can look like systemic and societal oppression; it can look like toxic stress. Being exposed to chronic stress from an environment or relationship can be very traumatic. Any situation or experience that leaves a person feeling powerless or helpless, a sense of loss of control, a loss of dignity, a loss of connection, a loss of a sense of belonging or meaning, the greater the impact the event will have.

Trauma creates a survival response in our body. Our nervous system activates a specific system, whether in the Sympathetic Nervous System with a "Fight or Flight" response or within the Parasympathetic Nervous System with a Dorsal Vagal response known as "Freeze."

When our body is in one of these states we cannot begin to heal because our body feels there is a threat and is unsafe. These activation systems can wreak havoc in our bodies and cause dis-ease. The after affects of trauma can present in the body with symptoms of pain, digestive problems, disease, anxiety, depression, heart and breathing dysregulation and so much more.

We can't begin to heal until we come from a place of embodiment and begin to bring our nervous system back into balance through somatic practices.

The subtle somatic practices in our programs are proven to create profound healing and allow us to get back to our Ventral Vagal states where we feel safe, engaged and connected.
